X-( – part 2 December 7, 2006

Posted by Karan in IIIT centric.

Infuriated. Bitter. These feelings seem to have been embedded into me of late. Today was no different. And there is an extremely valid reason for it. Continuing the spate of experiments being performed on UG2K5, it was announced today that it’s compulsory for us to attend the IJCAI conference, something, which apparently is held once in something-i-dont-remember-and-i-dont-care years. I cannot find a better expression that โ€œutter callousnessโ€ on the part of the people concerned behind this decision. The problem with the decision is that the conference comes bang in the middle of our winter vacations (which we just have for fifteen days). Knowing that such a conference was going to be held in January, why were our holidays moved to Jan? Why were we informed about this decision only today, at a time when most people going home have already made their bookings. Probably they did not have enough participants and wanted to make the campus look full. Whatever it is, nothing can match the charm of going home twice-thrice a year, and by enforcing this decision on us, Dr.Sangal is robbing us of the opportunity to freshen ourselves up for the tough months after Jan (especially considering that this is THE toughest sem among all).

The bigger issue I want to raise here is why do all the experiments have to be conducted upon the UG2K5 batch?

  1. The Jeevan Vidya experiment started with us (making it compulsory)

  2. Halfway into the second year, we still haven’t got our promised single rooms.

  3. Believe it or not, there are no PCs in our labs… the precedent’s started with us.

  4. The laptop experiment

  5. and many more… including this one

With IIIT seeing innumerable changes over the past few months, I think it’s high time we start looking at the implications of a lot of them. Are the students better off and happier now? What path is IIIT moving towards? Is this what constitutes the students’ dreams about IIIT?

PS: I may have been quite harsh in the post, but that’s how it is. The decision to truncate our holidays has left me with few options.
